How To Store Your Baked Goods - Frosted Cakes, Cookies, Brownies & more

With all the testing of baking kits we do at Bakestarters, we always have a constant supply of baked treats coming out of our kitchen. Baked treats are better fresh, and while we want to gobble them all up once they leave the oven, sadly, we still have our waistlines to care for.

But, as long as you know how to store your baked goods properly, you can still have delicious bakes anytime you want! Read on to check out some of our tips for storing the different types of baked goods in Singapore.

Unfrosted Products (e.g. Cakes / Muffins)

  • Cool goods completely
  • Wrap the cake tightly with plastic wrap, ensuring that no part of the cake is exposed (you can also store it in an airtight container)
  • Place in the fridge
  • Take out from the fridge 10 minutes before serving to let it thaw
  • Optional: Pop it in the toaster for a slightly crisp muffin top!

Singapore’s hot and humid weather may cause the cake to spoil more quickly, so keeping it in a cool environment will help with the storage. Just remember to wrap it tightly with plastic wrap so that less moisture is lost!

Frosted Bakes

  • Place frosted bakes in the fridge for 15-20 minutes to allow the frosting to set a bit (this way, when you wrap it, your frosting doesn't lose its shape)
  • Wrap completely with plastic wrap, or place in an airtight container
  • Place in the fridge
  • Take out from the fridge 10 minutes before serving to let it thaw. Do not reheat as this will melt the frosting.

Frosted goods may be more difficult to store, but the extra effort is certainly worth it! Just remember to let them thaw before serving them so that they regain their original texture.

Sliced Cakes

  • Place sliced, frosted bakes in the fridge for 15-20 minutes to allow the frosting to set a bit (this way, when you wrap it, your frosting doesn't lose its shape)
  • Wrap completely with plastic wrap, or place in an airtight container
  • Place in fridge
  • Take out from fridge 10 minutes before serving to thaw. Do not reheat as the heat will melt the frosting.

Take extra care to ensure that the missing parts of the cake (the slices that have been removed) are completely covered. That way, they won't dry out in the fridge.

Cookies

Earl Grey Cookies with Dark Chocolate Chunks

  • Cool completely
  • Place in an airtight container
  • Store in a dark and cool area (room temperature) or in the fridge
  • Optional: Add a slice of bread/apple wedge in the container to help retain the soft, chewy texture of your cookies.
  • If storing in the fridge: Bring cookies to room temperature before consuming or reheat in a toaster oven/oven to get back their freshly baked taste and texture!

Storing cookies in an airtight container helps them retain their moisture and prevent them from going stale, especially in Singapore's hot and humid conditions.

Brownies

Oreo Marshmallow Brownies

  • Cool completely
  • Wrap with plastic wrap tightly, or store in an airtight container
  • Place in the fridge
  • Let brownies thaw for 10-15 minutes before serving. If you prefer warm brownies, you may reheat them in a toaster oven / oven / microwave!

Let's be honest. There's really no need to store these brownies when they get gobbled up within the day!

Sharing is Caring

Learning the correct way to store different types of bakes is essential in ensuring the longevity of your baked goods. We hope these tips help you better store your baked treats!

A LITTLE HELLO

We believe that baking is so much more than simply following recipes. Here, we look to bridge the gap between professional pastry schools, and the regular baker.
